Talk by Sébastien Rémy

In connection with the exhibition "Chantal Akerman : Maniac Shadows", the artist Sébastien Rémy is giving a talk on the way his work is shot through with references to his issues with the body, the difficulty of communicating, reclusiveness and the interior/exterior dialectic. I, You, He, She; All Night Long; Là-bas; News from Home: these films by Chantal Akerman left their mark on him immediately and are a continuing part of his life. He will speak about the way he regularly returns to them, and how they help him grasp and formulate his personal trajectory. Using extracts from the films and his own works he explains how several of his projects more or less perceptibly bear the trace of these encounters, these "active presences".

Born in 1983, Sébastien Rémy, lives and works in Paris. His practice, whether in the form of installations, talks or texts, involves different ways of approaching the transmission of knowledge. It begins with phases of research and collection of documentary material on specific subjects  – the housebound recluse, unstable identities, the abandoning of art; etc. – and draws as much on literature as on art history and the cinema. In his recent projects, with their intertwining of factual and fictional sources, he creates installations that serve as vehicles for narrative. Since 2015 he has been working on the shifting identities of American artist Lee Lozano.
