Julien Bismuth & Virginie Yassef

Art Center

from 21 April to 27 Oct 2013

Le signe singe

exhibition

As part of the Art Centre's ongoing policy of pairing artists with shared concerns, Virginie Yassef and Julien Bismuth have set about interacting in both space and time: their adaptive dual exhibition is regularly supplemented with new works so as to enable a second chapter next autumn: a reopening that will also be a chance to come along and (re)discover the exhibition in a fresh light.

Virginie Yassef and Julien Bismuth have been working together informally for several years. Their first collaborative venture, Untitled Dialogue (2011), took the form of a novel experiment: putting a man and a monkey together in a room in a luxury Paris hotel. This project led us to suggest that they undertake a joint exhibition. As a starting point they have taken a fable by the Argentinian writer Leopoldo Lugones (1874–1938) in which a concern with animal evolution ties in with their shared interest in scientific experimentation, primitive life forms, language codes, empathy and the boundary between work and play. The works as a whole – videos, installations, sculptures and sound pieces, mostly never shown before – make up an impressionistic landscape of varying intensity, covering a range from silence to scream and from darkness to blinding light.

The first "untitled dialogue" in the hotel room gives rise to a video diptych, two montages shown alternately: two visions of the same experiment, using different presentations of the same images to explore the relationship with the Other – through a form of non-verbal communication – and with the body and space, as well as with passing time and our way of occupying it.

This work is counterpointed by A While, a film shot by Julien Bismuth in his studio, showing his idle moments and the series of "lazy sculptures" he sees as mere sketches to be implemented by others. At the exhibition entrance a tree planted by Virginie Yassef grows imperceptibly taller, while a little further on the spotlight trained on the art centre facade flickers as it emits the word error in Morse code.

The exhibition is all about communication: between the artists, but also with the viewer, whose itinerary and attention are profoundly affected by the meaning of what is being shown.

Virginie Yassef's spider castle takes the form of an environment demanding slowness and the utmost prudence as it turns viewers into wandering ghosts; Bismuth's films present infinite, sometimes imperceptible variations on the faces of actors and clowns; and Yassef asks us to take a tour of the exhibition under the guidance of a German Shepherd dog, or to pause in front of Le théâtre immobile (The Motionless Theatre) and the specific time frame of its music-and-light sequence.

Thus the entire exhibition seems based on a score composed of points and counterpoints, variable tempos and choreographed movements of works and bodies.

This exhibition is brought to you in partnership with the galerie Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois and the Fondation Nationale des Arts Graphiques et Plastiques.

Theatre by Virginie Yassef

Wed 24 April at 2:30 pm in the Theatre

They cross the slopes of pieces of cloth so as to leave no trace

In her first venture onto the stage visual artist Virginie Yassef is aiming at children. The magnificent title speaks eloquently of her sources: taking inspiration from Indian tribes and their magical thinking, she has come up with a strangely resonant installation-performance involving the different elements visible on stage. A live eagle, a child, a light source, a suspended rock: these seemingly unrelated objects come to life in a mute relationship that follows the fitful thread of thought and dreams.

72 children from Lognes following the caravanserail

Children move forward, guided from afar by some invisible force which they pass on to each other for reasons unknown. Suddenly they freeze. Have they lost something along the way?

No one has ever seen a dog deliberately exchange a bone with another dog (2)

This two-part performance is split so as to take place in two exhibition spaces. On 26 January at La Galerie – Centre d’art contemporain de Noisy-le-Sec a child-actor activated a set containing a magic mountain, a cave painting, peacock feathers and cow hides. At Noisiel the child changes into a dog and takes us through the exhibition as the other components mutate in turn.
