Sticking to his collaborative approach and his quest for "safe spaces" in art, Frédéric Nauczyciel is pursuing a performance-dialogue with Lisa Revlon, a transsexual woman from Baltimore's black ghetto with a hectic past behind her. Here the performance triggers a direct and sometimes comic narrative whose stress on clarification and catharsis revolves around women who left their mark on Lisa's life.
Frédéric Nauczyciel has been in conversation since 2014 with Lisa Revlon, a transsexual woman from Baltimore whose involvement in the drug trade earned her a prison term. Having since regained her place in society, and with the agreement of her lawyers, she is trying to shape her complex narrative embracing the duality of her life – or her condition: the social violence in a woman's body. Her love of the ghetto has enabled her to take back control of her life and ensures stability for those around her.
During a former conversation performed at Cité Internationale des Arts last October, Nauczyciel and Revlon have put together an intense yet joyful narrative that will be used for the writing of a short fiction film, where Lisa’s experience is transposed into the French context. Four important women, who had a great influence and impact on her life and choices, inhabit Lisa’s story: her grandmother, her mother, her sister and her daughter.
For this second chapter performed at La Ferme du Buisson, they will gather again to develop the imaginary dialogues between Lisa and these four women, and which will closure the plot of the future film.
The first takes were shot last October in Clichy-Sous-Bois, coproduced by Espace Khiasma–Fabrique Phantom and Ateliers Médicis. Nauczyciel’s Safe Place program, jointly organised with Cité Internationale des Arts, will be followed by further events.

Frédéric Nauczyciel
Frédéric Nauczyciel was trained with American choreographer Andrew Degroat. He uses his photographs, films and performances to set up spaces for collaboration. Since 2011 he has been building bridges between Baltimore ghettos and Paris northern urban areas, drawing a particular attention to the strength of performative subcultures such as voguing. His recent projects include a conceptual and performative Marching Band Paris Project that brings together vogue performers, teenagers, deaf children and amateur musicians, and which can become a safe place for its members.
Nauczyciel is presently an associate artist to the Ateliers Médicis Clichy-sous-Bois/Montfermeil, a cultural residency program in the urban outskirts of Northern Paris, to design a long term project of experience and transmission, with a group of teenagers who recently migrated to France. With his French and American accomplices, he aims to transpose the community oriented idea of a safe place into the French republican context: a space that relies on everyone’s specific identity, trajectory and story without any label. Frédéric Nauczyciel is an associate artist at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, where he develops a program based on the concepts of identity (adolescence), language (Creole and Yiddish), ghetto (Black and Jewish), hospitality, femininity and area of trust.
